I had the request to convert a Giant Cypress DX on Saturday. The owner was determined to flatten the 2 steep hills on his 26 km journey. We think that’s a super wise move, given the almost 30°C scorching summer temperatures in Auckland today.

The bike has a large standard frame, with lots of room between the top and down tubes. We decided to go with a frame mounted battery with 10.4Ah capacity. Plenty for the distance and it’ll ensure the battery lasts a long long long time.

Here’s how the conversion looks like:

Challenges

The main challenge with this conversion was the fitting of the stay arm of the mid-drive kit. The chain stay on this bike was thicker than usual, so the standard bolt that came with the kit was not long enough. I manage to find some longer bolts that did the job. Problem solved.
